Evaluation: ***
The splendid village of Portovenere, standing on a promontory in a setting of unparalleled beauty, with the Palmaria islands, Tino and Tinetto opposite it and its romantic church perched above the sea, closing the promontory and offering stupendous views, famous throughout the world for its long line of tower-houses, lined up one after the other, overlooking the sea and bearing the typical colours of the Ligurian seaside villages. They are houses of medieval origins, which had a defensive function, whose interiors overlook the medieval alleys full of shops and small restaurants that enliven the town centre.
Our apartment is situated in one of these tower-houses. You enter it from the town's main "carugio" (Ligurian name meaning alley), crossing a few very steep stairways (typical of these houses). The apartment has simple but pleasant furnishings and has a window in the living/dining-room that offers an enchanting panorama of the small harbour, the Palmaria island and the Gulf, with the Apuan Alp mountaintops in the background. It has a small kitchen that is well equipped, a double bedroom that overlooks the narrow "carugio", a small room without a window with a single bed, available only for small children, and a bathroom with shower. In addition to the kitchen inside the apartment, on the entrance landing (where the upstairs neighbour who rarely stays there, may occasionally pass by) available to the guests there is a marble sink, an oven and washing machine that used to be used by the owners in preparing fish dishes (this is an area where many mussel dishes are made and are in fact, breed here and are called "muscoli"). From the small harbour, there are frequent ferries that go to the Cinque Terre, to the islands opposite the town, to Lerici and Portofino. The car parks in Portovenere are all pay garages (you can request weekly passes at the city offices) and are located along the streets that enter and exit the town (bus and shuttle service in the summer).
